Francesca hails from the picturesque and lively city of Naples. Both Neapolitans, Francesca and her husband moved to Rome in 2002, and found herself living just a stone's throw from the Pantheon, near San Luigi de' Francesi.  At that time, she began furthering her specialization in Classical Archaeology and did daily research at the Scuola Archeologica Francese di Roma in the French Embassy, located in Piazza Farnese.  Eventually, she moved to the 1920s neighborhood Garbatella, and then finally to the adjacent neighborhood San Paolo, where she lives with her husband and children.

For Francesca, Rome, is one of the most beautiful cities in the world: from its history to its traditions.  It is a city of passion: artistic, linguistic and cultural.  Francesca loves working as a guide, because it gives her the opportunity to meet new people, who have travelled from far away to learn about Rome.

Her approach to touring is eclectic as she caters her tours to each tour group. She takes great consideration the backgrounds of her tour members, including their culture and interests, as well as whether or not children and/or teenagers are present, even their length of stay.  Francesca does this so that every tour member has a unique experience of her tours--never boring, always enriching and unforgettable.

She joined Mind the Guide because, like her, it takes a unique position of giving the power of choice to customers, allowing them to choose how they want to experience Rome and with whom.

Tour Trademark:  "Eclectic", "never boring, always enriching and unforgettable", focused creating unique tours to match the uniqueness of her tour members.

Professional Background

Francesca's love for archaeology began in high school, where she studied Latin and ancient Greek.  After graduating, she went on to study and specialize in Classics, Art History and Archaeology.  She has two masters degrees: one that focuses on restoration and promotion of historical centers and sites, and another in Marketing.

After completing these studies, she worked on several excavations in Campania, Cuma, Pontecagnano, in Pozzuoli, near Casera, in Rome and also in Athens.  Still, she has always been drawn to the worlds of management and museum education, and so she trained in various museums in Naples and Romes; however, her best training experience was in the British Museum.

Living in London aided Francesca in achieving her fluency in the English language, and she thanks an Erasmus program in Munich for her high proficiency in German.

Reviews by Jordyn, New Zealand on Nov 2, 2016

She was so knowledgeable, having an archeologist take you on a tour of a site like Ostia Antica is just brilliant. I only wish I had had more time as we did not get to see everything: Ostia is huge! Get prepared to walk. I would love to go back and have another tour with Francesca to see the things we missed. Thankyou for making ancient Rome come alive.

Reviews by Nicole, Tampa, Florida on Oct 12, 2016

We did the colosseum tour with Francesca and it was one of the highlights of our trip. The tour was exciting from start to finish always giving interesting facts and was eager to answer any questions. Her English was perfect and you can tell how much she loves the history and beauty of the place in the way she speaks and shows excitement to tell you her stories. Would recommend to anyone and everyone!

Reviews by Deborah, Newport, Uk on Oct 9, 2016

Brilliant tour with knowledgeable guide. We learnt so much and really appreciated the access to the underground and the higher levels. Francesca, the guide, did a really good job and the group size seemed just right for this tour. It would have been good to have more time in both the Collosseum and Forum but 3 1/2 hours tour is about the right time. When the tour is over, don't miss getting into the church at the bottom of the Palatine Hill for early Christian paintings on walls.

The guide, Francesca, was very informative. She ensured that the group covered the highlights of the Vatican and Basilica. Despite it being a very hot, crowded afternoon at the Vatican, Francesca was able to remain professional and give us confidence to get through as much as possible in the visit.

We visited Rome and trusted our tour of the Collosseum and the Roman Forum to MindtheGuide. The entire tour was wonderful. Francesca was an excellent guide: she knew the history and made our tour so much fun! I will absolutely use Mind the Guide again next time I'm in Rome!

Reviews by Jean H, United States on Aug 14, 2016

I find it hard to describe this fantastic experience. The look of longing on the faces of other tourists who watched us go into the underground as well as up into the third ring, was unforgettable. Francesca, our guide, is a working archaeologist and knows the site inside and out. Wonderful!

The tour was excellent. We did the Underground Colosseum Tour and got to visit the Arena floor, underground and top levels. I noticed that we were one of the only tour groups to visit these areas. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable about the sites and the history of Rome. She provided great insights and details and helped us really understand the importance of the Colosseum to life of the Romans. The tour was very well organized from beginning to end!

It was alot of walking but was definitely worth doing for the restricted access tour at the colosseum. Loads of new information. Started to switch off a bit at the end due to it being a really hot day and walking alot but nothing bad about the tour. Every single question was answered with no delays. Genuinely knowledgeable tour guide

    • "Great Colosseum underground tour"
Reviews by byumomof, Utah, USA on Jun 28, 2016

We were first time visitors in Rome and knew we wanted to visit the Colosseum but didn't know much more than that. After doing a lot of research, followed the advice of many and decided to do the Underground Colosseum Tour, Forum and Palatine Hill. We began looking for a tour company and decided to go with MindtheGuide. We liked the idea of working with a company that was a bit smaller and more individual based rather than a large generic one. We showed up at the appointed spot at the tour start time and were met by delightful Francesca. She was personable, friendly and knowledgeable. We felt like we were spending time with a new friend. We loved being able to go down into the areas below the main level to see how the people of the time conducted their jobs and what life was like for them. Climbing up to the very top level was also a treat because the views were amazing. After the Colosseum we went over to Palatine Hill and The Forum. Just as Francesca was finishing up the end of the tour, there was thunder and lightning and with a big clap the skies opened up and it rained buckets. We had to run for cover and did not get a chance to tell her how much we enjoyed the tour. We would seek her out again if we were to go back and do another tour of anywhere in Rome.

    • "Best tour provider in Rome!"
Reviews by Alex M, Usa on Jun 22, 2016

We thoroughly enjoyed this tour with Francesca. The almost 4 hours went by in a flash and we enjoyed every minute. The noticeable difference between this tour and others we observed was that we seemed to have access to areas that few others did; we actually stood at arena level, like a gladiator, and in the underground, to breathe and smell where they prepared for their battles! Book this on your trip to Rome, it's fun and educational in equal measure and Francesca was superb!

    • "Super Knowledgeable. Highly Recommended!"
Reviews by Olena M. from Los Angeles, USA on Jun 14, 2016

Francesca was our tour guide for Underground Colosseum, The Forum and Palatino Hill. Loved, loved, loved her! Extremely knowledgeable about the history of ancient Rome. If you want to get a feel of what it was like to be a Gladiator during the Roman Empire times, book this tour! You will be taken to the same cave-like predicament that the gladiators, slaves and animals lived in. Mind blowing and worth every penny! Most people take the regular Colosseum tour that only takes you to the general ground level which can't compare to the tour of the entire place. Francesca was very helpful, took the time to answer group's questions, as well as allowed for extra time for picture taking. Book her without hesitation, you won't be disappointed!!!

    • "Very informative and friendly guide"
Reviews by Graham, Manchester, UK on May 28, 2016

If you want a guide who will give you excellent facts about the history of Rome, then look no further. There are other guides who will offer information to the various Roman monuments and buildings in the area but none as professional and knowledgeable as Francesca who is an archeologist who really knows her subject matter and not just a 'guide' who repeats a learned script. We had excellent access to parts of the Colosseum which not all visiting public get to see and the description of how life was back in Roman times created an excellent picture of how the people lived. This was one of many highlights of the tour. There is so much to see and do on this trip and although the day is long, the time will fly and you will leave feeling you truly have had a comprehensive insight into Rome, and the people who lived in that time. I would fully recommend this tour to anyone. This trip is probably more suited for older children (12+) and adults given the time you take to look around all the wonderful, interesting sites but we took our 4 month old son along in a baby carrier and it was fine for us. If you love Roman archeology and want professional, in depth knowledge, then look no further. Excellent!

We learned so much about Ancient Rome than we though we would. Francesca was very knowledgeable and helpful when asked sometimes random questions. • "This is the tour you want to take at the Colosseum"
Reviews by Grace, Toronto Canada on Jan 1, 2016

This was the last group tour of our vacation and frankly I was a bit group toured out. I was pretty much ready to hate this Colesseum tour but I actually didn't realize that I was about to have a very special experience. We met Francesca outside of the Colesseum amidst the hordes of tourists and after splitting us in two small groups we walked through the Palatine Hill and Forum. Francesca had handy before and after drawings a how in us what the structures looked like now and back in their prime. Very useful for understanding and getting a real sense of the History. Her stories brought this space alive and never before, despite previous visits to Rome, did I get such an appreciation for this space. We stopped for a quick coffee and bathroom break and then we entered the colesseum. The good news is that you get in much faster through a special group entrance. The even better news is you do not have to move about the Colesseum with the masses. On this Mind the Guide tour, you get access to very special places. First you a few take onto a rebuilt "ground level" - I'm talking about the level a gladiator would have walked out onto. Even better, the hordes of other tourist are above you like a crowd. It has an amazing perspective. Then, you get to go to the underground level, where the animals were kept and the gladiators prepared. You get to see the trap doors they used to raise up the animals and get a sense of just how dangerous and dark it would have been down there. Then you go way up to the upper level, where most standard tours are not allowed. Yet another outstanding perspective of this amazing place. Of course it doesn't hurt that your guide is an archeologist and an historian. Really, if you are going on go to the Colesseum, this is the way to go.

Colosseum Underground Tour. Outstanding knowledge, with the ability to deliver an enthusiastic and engaging presentation. It is amazing the number of people who fumble their way through these incredible sights, when they could gain so much more appreciation and understanding by spending a nominal amount. Plus VIP access to the private underground tunnels and the highest level of the Colosseum, where very few are permitted. As an avid traveler and huge believer in the value of excellent guides, I would highly recommend Francesca!! Thank you for a truly enriching experience.

Reviews by Mark Y., North Plainfield on Oct 16, 2015

Our tour of the Colosseum and the Roman Forum with Francesca was the best tour ever. Taking the underground tour of the Colosseum was an absolute must for my first trip to Rome. Not only was MindTheGuide the least expensive, our tour guide Francesca was an absolute delight. An archaeologist and scholar, she not only provided a detailed history of the Colosseum, but insight into the archaeological detective work behind much of that history. The tour for both the Colosseum and the Forum takes about 3.5 hours and is not overly strenuous. Comfortable shoes are a must.

This was the one tour we were most looking forward to and Francesca did not dissapoint. She was very informative and was more helpful. Francesca answered any questions asked, brought the whole tour to life, spoke clearly and just made the whole experience very memorable. We joined another group for the underground experience and the gentleman who took that group (also from mind the guide) was brilliant too. They gave a very detailed and informative description of gladiatorial life and the way things would have been back then, which was deeply interesting. The tour groups aren't large so you get the feeling of a very personal tour. Safe to say if you wish to book onto a tour choose this company to go with. Both guides were fantastic!

My Mom, sister and I spent 5 days in Rome. For me it was the fourth time in Italy, but first time for them who were really excited. We largely guided ourselves (bad for us), but for the Vatican/Sistine Chapel/St.Peter we booked Francesca. It was amazing, she is a very good tour guide, not only informative, but also very passionate about her job, Italian archaeology and art, so in a half day we learned a lot more than the previous days spent on our own. Moreover, as in the Sistine the guides are not allowed to speak, before entering she gave us a full description and many interesting details with useful visual aids on her iPad (great resource!). We are very happy to have met her, she really added depth to our visit. Thanks!!!

Francesca was really nice and not only did she tour us around the Colosseum and its Undergrounds like a real ancient Roman, but she also took some time after the tour to direct us to the best restaurants and views of the Eternal City! We really really enjoyed our stay and we have to thank Francesca for this – we wouldn’t have been happier to have Her as a guide, so excited and passionate about what she does! We can blame that on Francesca—just kidding! No, Francesca was great and really opened up the city to us in a way that we could never have imagined. It wasn’t just about seeing the Colosseum, it was about learning how the Romans came to be as they were and as they are now. Really impressive guide, and really impressive tour!
